May 26th Meeting

It was a very good meeting, with Sandy Marthaler as our Toastmaster for the first time! Sandy gave us a great theme with “New Beginnings”. Sandy is a substitute teacher, and her talk about how this time of year and her students provides us time to reflect upon both the past and future was well-received by an appreciative group.

We had lots of guests tonight! Thanks to Debbie Hall, Michelle DeVore, Samantha Tino, Jodi Horner, Kaitlyn Wolf and Kellen Stephens for visiting us, as well as letting us learn a little more about themselves.

We had three speeches tonight. Joanna Knott helped us know more about CRM software with a strong presentation called CRM Software Selection . Bill Morgan gave us a glimpse into what traffic cops really want us to do in Late One Night. And Sandy Marthaler helped us to understand more about why it is important to Apologize.

Bruce Ekins did a great job as our Grammarian/Ah-Counter and his Word of the Day was “Transitions”.

Joanna Knott finished up the meeting as our General Evaluator and finished up with club business.

Our best speech evaluator tonight was Michelle DeVore, and our best speaker was Bill Morgan.

Let’s celebrate as we have four new members! We are proud to say that Samantha Tino, Kellen Stephens, Jodi Horner and Kaitlyn Wolf are now members of Parker Toastmasters!

What is a Competent Leader?

What is a Competent Leader? How does Toastmasters help you to become one?

These are good questions, and the basis of these may be answered by your active participation in a club.

Most everyone has a pretty good understanding that Toastmasters is a proven program which helps you become a better public speaker; it’s not well known that Toastmasters can also be instrumental in developing your leadership skills.

The Competent Leader Manual is your structured guide, and by following its form, you will find yourself filling every required role at your club’s meetings, sometimes several times over. Your Competent Leader Manual requires that another club member give you a critique on how you fulfilled your role, and it allows him or her to offer constructive criticism for your next attempt. Newer members find that they are a little hesitant at first to ask someone to help fill out the manual, but soon they become accustomed to asking for assistance. This is a positive thing as this helps the club members get to know one another and to bond.

You should start out like most new members and take on a role as a Timer or Grammarian within the first couple of meetings. After that you can step out and try Speech Evaluator, which is a good exercise in active listening and in impromptu speaking. At nearly the same time you may find yourself more assertive and find yourself volunteering to be a Table Topics Speaker – another great opportunity for impromptu speaking.

While you begin to get comfortable with the meetings, you are becoming an active, participating member. While you may not feel that this is really practicing leadership, you are actually a good example for a brand new member who is just finding his feet. You are contributing to the meetings, and you are making an impact to others. And at the same time you are working through your Competent Communicator manual and becoming a better speaker you are getting more immersed in active listening and in structured communication.

The next roles you can try are Topicsmaster, General Evaluator and finally Toastmaster, which provide extensive and valuable experience. It is in these roles that you will get to lead the club through larger and larger parts of the meeting, and which help you to understand how to guide your club with less and less structure. It is here where you find you will find your greatest challenges and rewards as a speaker. You may not feel that you are a leader, but you have already made great strides in your confidence and in taking on more important roles for the club. In fact by example you are a Leader.

What’s next? As a club member (being an Officer for your club is not a prerequisite) there are a variety of activities where you get to become more involved, and contribute to the club as a whole. These include:

Assist the Club’s Webmaster
Befriend a Guest
Club Newsletter Editor
Club PR Campaign Chair
Club Special Event Chair
Club Speech Contest Chair
Help Produce a Club Newsletter
High-Performance Leadership (HPL) Guidance Committee Member
Mentor for an Existing Member
Organize a Club Membership Campaign or Contest
Organize a Club PR Campaign
Organize a Club Special Event
Organize a Club Speech Contest
PR Campaign Chair

These more advanced activities or projects never happen in a vacuum. You should work with your club officers to get involved with your advanced projects, and they can provide you the benefit of their guidance and experience to help the projects bring success to your club and to yourself. Your creativity, people skills and project skills will come together as you work hard to bring each project to fruition.

As you get to know your club officers better, you may imagine yourself in their role, and wonder how you can help your club. They can guide you on your journey and they can help you to consider a formal leadership role in the club.

Within a year of active membership, you can very well complete most if not all of the 22/23 required steps in your Competent Leader manual. Upon reflection, you will see that you are changed, with more confidence, poise and assertiveness. Others begin see you as a leader who is a good example for others to follow.

Your next move? Competent Leader is one of the important milestones which help you to on your journey to achieve the pinnacle of Toastmasters achievement, Distinguished Toastmaster. Only your commitment will tell you. But being a Competent Leader is an important and life-changing first step.

Tonight’s meeting was one of the best of the year. There were great speeches which were very informative and engaging, and there was participation by everyone at the meeting.

Bill Morgan was our Toastmaster for the evening. Eric Dunham served triple-duty as Timer, Table Topics Master and Speech Evaluator.

Karen Bennett and Bruce Ekins were our guests tonight.

Janelle Ames, Mrs. Colorado, was our special guest tonight. Janelle talked about how her pageant journey was helped by being active in Toastmasters.

We had five speeches tonight. Caroline Nguyen gave a great speech on the Art of Breathing.  Sandy Marthaler gave an interesting speech on Cell Phone Etiquette. Eric Dunham gave us a lesson on Rules of the West, cowboy hat and all. Joanna Knott presented an informative speech on Manage and Motivate while Michele O’Brien-Rose gave a valuable speech on Making Ethical Decisions, done in the Ignite! style of speaking with 20 slides going every 15 seconds.

It was Michele’s 10th overall speech so she earned her Competent Communicator award, and received a standing ovation for her achievement.

Joel Stevenson, Paul Johnson, Michele O’Brien-Rose, Eric Dunham and Bill Morgan were speech evaluators.

Table topics run by Eric was very innovative. Eric gave pictures from newspaper articles and the speaker had to give a short speech on the subject. Karen Bennett earned Best Table Topics speaker for her great speech about how the fisherman evoked fond memories of her brother. Our other guests, Janelle Ames and Bruce Ekins, also participated in table topics.

Our best speaker tonight was Eric Dunham and our best evaluator was Bill Morgan.

Paul Johnson was grammarian and ah-counter, and the word of the day was Zeitgeist. Joanna Knott did a great job as our General Evaluator.

From our area governor Elaine Love:

If you would like to finish a few more speeches and perhaps earn an additional educational award before June 30, here is an opportunity for one more speech.

Everyone brings a beverage (usually an adult beverage) and/or a snack to share. Social hour from 6 to 7 and speeches at 7. This is also an opportunity to add another evaluation, Toastmaster or timer role to your Competent Leader manual.

I am willing to host again as my house seems to be central. 3249 Country Club Parkway, Castle Rock. Please RSVP. It helps to know how many are attending.

April 28th Meeting

Tonight was Eric Dunham’s first try as the Toastmaster, and he did an admirable job in leading the club through tonight’s meeting.

We had two guests tonight – Amy Jordheim visiting from the Lunch Out Loud club, and Elaine Holm, who is considering joining our club.

Amy Jordheim gave a great speech from the Public Relations manual, speech 5 – Crisis Management. “Taken Over!” was from the point of view from a CEO who was announcing a hostile takeover. Caroline Nguyen’s “Cultural Differences Between the West and East” was from her perspective of someone who grew up in Vietnam but now lives in the United States. This was speech 2 from the Competent Communicator manual. Sandy Marthaler gave speech 3 from the CC manual as well, with her entertaining and informative “Inbox Zero”.

Amy and Caroline shared the Best Speaker award tonight.

Bill Morgan was the Best Evaluator.

Paul Johnson had a great table topics idea – he handed out a penny to each speaker. The speaker had to come up with something to say about the year that the penny was made. Every one at the meeting tonight, including our guests Amy and Elaine, participated in Table Topics.

Eric Dunham gave the Best Table Topic, reminiscing about Newton Jr. High back in 1978.

Bill Morgan presented Impromptu Speaking from the Better Speaker series. He included this handout with his speech.

Joel Stevenson finished up the meeting on a strong note as our General Evaluator.
