Being a Stronger Ah Counter / Grammarian

Ah-Counter / Grammarian

This roles works on your listening skills.  Your assistance is greatly appreciated because as a grammarian, you notice habits, nervous ticks, and incorrect phrasing that the speaker is unconsciously unaware of.  Your duty is to observe and make members more aware of these unconsious habits.

In a Nutshell:

  • Provide Word of the Day –  use a vocabulary word, and provide the audience with its definition and an example of it used in a sentence.  Write the word on the board for all to see.  While giving your report at the end of the meeting, tell the audience who used the word in their speech / evaluations.
  • When listening to speeches and evaluations, listen for: Fragmented sentence structues, ‘uhhs’ and ‘ahhs’, cliches, pronounciation, and the use of language.
  • As the Ah-Counter, keep track of the ‘uhhs’ and ‘ahhs’ for each speaker.  Report these at the end.

Congratulations to the following members who by simply submitting their membership renewals prior to the drop of the gavel at last nights meeting (and by the luck of the draw), won the drawing. All who submitted their renewals before 7pm last night were included in the drawing. Our visitor, Michelle, drew the winning names and they are:
  • Bill Morgan – Winner of the $10 Toastmaster International Gift Certificate
  • Raani Varma – Winner of the Hardbound Toastmaster logo Notebook
  • Precy Hilario – Winner of the Toastmaster logo with the Smedly quote mug

Today’s meeting was different because we had one speaker, and extended table topics.  Our Toastmaster, Ashley Jones, gave the audience random questions and people were randomly called to talk about the topic from 4 to 5 minutes.  This was great training in impromptu speaking and is valuable to to speakers who are put on the spot. Elaine Chancellor facilitated the table topic session as the “Master”.

Our speaker was Elaine Chancellor, who gave us a great background on country music and its history (CC#7).  Her evaluator was Michelle DeVore.

The table topics speakers were:

Bill Bevard

Question: What do you value most in life?

Nina Minary

Question: What is your biggest fear and what do you do about it?

Eric Dunham

Question: How does social acceptance influences how we live?

Todd Williams

Question: What is good/bad about the public school system?

Michelle (guest)

Question: What human qualities do we need more of and why?

Allegra (guest)

Question: What are some of your biggest concerns for the future?

Other Roles:

Vice President of Public Relations

We are starting our New Year well by picking up velocity with our members giving speeches.  Our Toastmaster tonight was Michelle DeVore who fulfilled that role with great proficiency.

The first speech was given by Ashley Jones, where she spoke about the concept of using solutions over problems.  She offered food for thought where if we focus on solving problems with problems, we end up spinning the wheels in place.  Instead, it is beneficial to identify and pursue a solution, no matter how small it seems.  The evaluator for Ashley’s speech was Elaine Chancellor.

To solve a problem, seek a solution instead of covering it with problems.

The second speech was given by Joanna Knott.  This was a special occasion speech, where Joanna was to accept an award with grace, and sincerity.  She thanked the club for nominating her at the toastmaster of the year consecutively for the past two years.  She was able to recall the past and her passage from being the VP of Education to where she is today.  The evaluator of Joanna’s speech was Eric Dunham.

The third speech given was by Bill Bevard.  This was his final 10th speech of the competent communicators manual which was to be delivered with confidence and inspiration.  He did just that.  Bill talked about his journey through Toastmasters and the changes that it made for him in his life.  We want to congratulate Bill on his accomplishment and for completing his competent communicator journey. Bill’s speech was evaluated by Martin Cobb.

Congratulations Bill Bevard!

The fourth speech was presented by Eric Dunham and it was titled Know your Audience.  In this speech, Eric talked about the importance of knowing who your audience is prior to presenting to them.  By knowing who they are, you can tweak your speech to their interests and make it much more effective.  He gave useful categories of identifying information on your speakers through a handout, and through his speech.

Know your audience prior to presenting to them.

Roles for the evening:

Grammarian / ah Counter : Nina Minary
Table Topics: Martin Cobb
Vote Counter: Horyce Hilario
General Evaluator: Nikita Kazakov

newyear2013

by Nikita Kazakov
Vice President of Public Relations

Today’s meeting was eventful with two main speeches and two advanced project speeches.  The evening started out with Sundeep Gopagoni taking on the role as the toastmaster for the first time, which he elegantly fulfilled.

The first speaker was Ashley Jones, who gave a speech titled The U in Compassion.  She shared another angle of looking at compassion with us.  Instead of only seeking to give compassion to others, why do we not show compassion towards ourselves?  This is a surefire way of overcoming self-doubt and self-criticism.  The evaluator for this speech was Eric Dunham.

Nina Minary gave us the second speech in the form of an interview titled PTM TV#1, which featured Eric Dunham as the host who asked Nina questions about her duties and membership revolving around Toastmasters International.  Without missing a beat, Nina suavely answered each question without hesitation.  The evaluator for this speech was Marcy Brack.

The table topics led by Nina Minary were a hit tonight as almost all members were able to participate in a 1-2 minute impromptu speech.  Table topics is one of the many ways that Parker Toastmasters encourages its members to stretch their comfort levels by speaking in front of an audience without prior knowledge of the question to be asked.

There were two advanced HPL presentations given tonight.  Eric Dunham presented An Evening with Traci Brown.  Marcy Brack gave a presentation about Starting a Corporate Toastmasters Club, which focused on her successful efforts in starting a toastmasters club from scratch at her company.

Other Roles of the Evening included:
Ah Counter / Grammarian: Michelle DeVore
Timer: Elaine Chancellor
General Evaluator: Nikita Kazakov
Vote Counter: Ashley Jones
